“Green” Online Schools
Hi
A new term that has been floating around is “sustainable schools.”
These are schools that have implemented strategies to reduce energy consumption and environmental waste, ultimately resulting in a reduction of green house gas.
It occurred to me that online schools are in many ways the ultimate “sustainable schools.” Why?
1. They don’t require students to commute to them, resulting in a significant reduction in fuel costs and traffic. No buses, no cars and no motorbikes required.
2. Online schools use less paper. The classes and notes are distributed online. This means less trees need to be cut down in order to provide paper and the environment is better off for it.
3. Online schools have no campuses or at best, a few. They use significantly less electricity than their campus counterparts.
According to a 2005 study by the UK’s Open University Design Innovation Group, distance learning universities used around 90% less energy and produced 85% less CO2 emissions than traditional brick and mortar campuses.
4. No physical campus means, no need to erect buildings and hence no need to use fuel associated with that. People don’t have to contend with any environmental or noise pollution associated with a building site.
5. Since there are no physical campuses, land with a fragile ecological balance can be conserved. This could be beneficial to the water table and animal life in the area.
All these are more reasons to seriously consider getting your degree online.
Make it a great day
David
